Lib Dems slam Labour over betting shop advertising on council property

Haringey’s Lib Dem opposition have slammed the Labour Leader of Haringey Council for advertising a betting shop firm on council owned banners.

The banners on Station Road, Park Avenue and the High Road in Wood Green, are regularly used by the council to get advertising income.

However, Lib Dem councillors were shocked to see the banners being used to advertising the betting company. They claim that using the banners for this purpose is in breach of the council’s own policy and that the council should not be promoting gambling, particularly in Wood Green which has a high number of betting shops.

Cllr Gail Engert, Haringey Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, comments:

“I am disgusted that advertising for gambling has been displayed by the Labour-run council on public property. This is clearly in breach of the council’s own policy and flies in the face of comments made by the Labour Leader about the need to stop the proliferation of betting shops in Haringey.

“Station Road in Wood Green is really prominent as it leads up to Alexandra Palace so thousands of people will see these betting banners. It is completely the wrong message for the Labour-run Council to be sending to people. I have written to the Labour Leader of the council and said they should be taken down immediately.”
